On Resolution Limit of the Modularity in Community Detection
نویسندگان
چکیده
Modularity Q has been broadly used as a valid measure for community detection in complex networks. Fortunato and Barthélemy later proposed that modularity contains an intrinsic scale that depends on the total number of links in the network. But some extra restrictions on some parameters are needed for their analysis. In this paper we further study this problem. Here we give general analysis and more details to show that the resolution limit of Q depends not only on the total links but also on the degree of interconnectedness between pairs of communities. Without any constraint imposed on the parameters, there exists a proper area of the validity (or invalidity) of Q, which is deduced by the definitions of community structure and modularity Q, all these make the analysis here more reasonable.

Community Detection using a New Node Scoring and Synchronous Label Updating of Boundary Nodes in Social Networks
Community structure is vital to discover the important structures and potential property of complex networks. In recent years, the increasing quality of local community detection approaches has become a hot spot in the study of complex network due to the advantages of linear time complexity and applicable for large-scale networks. However, there are many shortcomings in these methods such as in...
متن کاملMining Overlapping Communities in Real-world Networks Based on Extended Modularity Gain
Detecting communities plays a vital role in studying group level patterns of a social network and it can be helpful in developing several recommendation systems such as movie recommendation, book recommendation, friend recommendation and so on. Most of the community detection algorithms can detect disjoint communities only, but in the real time scenario, a node can be a member of more than one ...
متن کاملNetwork community detection using modularity density measures
Modularity, since its introduction, has remained one of the most widely used metrics to assess the quality of community structure in a complex network. However the resolution limit problem associated with modularity limits its applicability to networks with community sizes smaller than a certain scale. In the past various attempts have been made to solve this problem. More recently a new metric...
متن کاملOvercoming Resolution Limits in MDL Community Detection
A popular approach to community detection in networks is to search for partitions that maximize modularity [7]. However, recent work has identified two important limitations of modularity as a community quality criterion: a resolution limit; and a bias towards finding equal-sized communities. Compression-based approaches that search for partitions that minimize description length are a recent a...
متن کاملNarrow scope for resolution-limit-free community detection.
Detecting communities in large networks has drawn much attention over the years. While modularity remains one of the more popular methods of community detection, the so-called resolution limit remains a significant drawback. To overcome this issue, it was recently suggested that instead of comparing the network to a random null model, as is done in modularity, it should be compared to a constan...
